This program was jointly sponsored by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and the Produce for Better Health Foundation (PBH) from 1991-2006 as a public/private partnership to increase fruit and vegetable consumption for better health. NCI was the lead health authority and PBH interfaced with the private sector. In 2005, NCI transferred lead health authority status for the 5 A Day program to the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC). Soon thereafter, the Fruits & Veggies—More Matters program replaced 5 A Day, in light of changing dietary recommendations, but PBH and CDC still partner in implementing the program.
