The Food Guidance System The newest tool for educating consumers
The “food guidance system” is the federal government’s
newest tool for educating consumers about what to eat for optimal health.
This educational system communicates
to Americans of all ages the dietary advice contained in the 2005 Dietary
Guidelines for Americans, which recommend that we eat more fruits and vegetables
than any other food group. It replaces the outdated Food Guide Pyramid.
As the federal government’s advice to consumers
on what to eat, its consumer communications and public policy value cannot
be overstated:
It will be widely referenced by government at federal,
state and local levels.
It will be widely publicized by media, health professionals,
educators and the food industry.
It will broadly impact federal policies, programs,
budgets and activities involving food and nutrition.
