Putting a priority on fruits and vegetables PBH policy efforts seek healthier food environment
Making fruits and vegetables a priority in federal nutrition
policies and programs is PBH’s priority! Read more about our current
focus areas, and how you can help advance the cause.
Current priorities:
Child Nutrition Reauthorization (CNR) Implementation
Pursue full implementation of fruit and vegetable recommendations included
in the 2004 CNR act; secure necessary funds through appropriations for fruit
and vegetable provisions in CNR and for other child nutrition programs that
have a fruit and vegetable component.
Dietary Guidelines and Food Guide Pyramid Revisions
Assure that the strong fruit and vegetable messages conveyed in the 2005
Dietary Guidelines for Americans are reflected in federal policy, programs and practices.
2007 Farm Bill
Work to include a provision for matched funding of a national fruit and vegetable
marketing effort.
Funding for Key Fruit and Vegetable Initiatives
Secure funding directly for PBH through the federal appropriations process
so that PBH can better manage implementation of its National
Action Plan and for Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Division of Nutrition
and Physical Activity to carry out the federal component of the National
5 A Day for Better Health program.
USDA Woman, Infant, and Children (WIC) Program Food Package Revisions
Ensure that WIC Food Packages include a greater variety of fruits and vegetables
based on strong fruit and vegetable recommendations of the Institute of Medicine.
